Spring has sprung which means it's time to deep clean your home. As you de-clutter your closet and wash your windows, don’t forget to give some love to your carpet! Here are some tips we at Floor Coverings International® of like to use to refresh our carpet in the spring.
Shift the Furniture
The weight of your furniture will cause dents in your carpet over time. Every spring you should shift your furniture a few inches. This will allow your carpet to breathe and recover from the weight.
Effective Vacuuming
Weekly vacuuming is necessary for the maintenance of any carpet. But, spring-cleaning is a great time to assess whether you’re vacuuming effectively. First, empty your vacuum bag. Vacuums work best when their bag is no more than half full, any more and it will start to lose suction. Vacuuming is a chore that most try to breeze through quickly, but a vacuum is most effective when used in multiple slow strokes. This allows the vacuum to agitate and lift dirt trapped in the fibers and ensure your carpet is really getting clean.
Deodorize
After a long winter of having the windows shut, every home can use a little refreshing. To make your carpet smell fresh, try this trick. Pick your favorite essential oil and thoroughly mix 10 to 20 drops into a box of baking soda. Sprinkle the baking soda mix onto your carpet and allow it to sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Vacuum it up and enjoy the fresh scent! Store extra baking soda in a glass container and use it whenever your home needs a little boost.
Deep Clean Carpets
Did you know that many carpet warranties require you to have the carpet professionally cleaned at least once a year? Every spring you should have your carpets cleaned professionally. This will rid your carpet of stains, stubborn dirt, and bacteria that have accumulated over the winter. You should always use a professional steam cleaner because at home systems can leave a layer of moisture that does not get dried quickly enough. This creates an opportunity for mold to grow underneath your carpet.
