You may vacuum your home once every week, but how often do you deep clean your carpet flooring? Whether or not you have pets, allergies, or children that impact your carpets, it’s very important to deep clean your carpet flooring at least once a year. Carpet traps more dirt, dust, and grime than we realize, and vacuuming is only a short-term solution. At Floor Coverings International of Orange County and Middletown, NY, our flooring experts want to help you with your deep cleaning needs.
It’s crucial to treat any spots and stains before turning on your carpet cleaner machine. There are two options to pretreat your carpet stains; using a store bought carpet stain solution or using a home remedy. The first is simply a matter of choosing the right product for you. When you are ready to use it however, be sure to test it on an inconspicuous area, such as a corner of a closet. This way you can make sure that the cleaning solution won’t discolor your flooring.
If you choose to make a home remedy solution to treat the stains, all you will need are two ingredients: distilled white vinegar and baking soda.
- Pour the white vinegar onto the damaged area, just enough to cover the stain.
- Next, sprinkle the baking soda over the area. This will create a quick bubbling reaction, which indicates it is trying to lift the stain.
- For most stains, let your concoction sit for at least 30 minutes. Then soak up the damp spot by dabbing and rubbing the spot lightly with a rag. Wait for the area to dry completely and then vacuum. One thing to note is that if it is a small stain, you can simply let it dry and vacuum without dabbing the area.
Carpet Cleaning Systems
After you have spot treated your carpet flooring, you can move on to your carpet cleaning or steam cleaning machine. When you’re cleaning your carpet yourself, be sure to protect your furniture as well as the subfloor that the carpet rests on. There are two methods to clean a carpet: the water extraction method and the dry extraction method.
The water extraction method is also known as a steam cleaner. This machine works by injecting solution into the area of the carpet, then right away sucking the dirty water back into its container. Keep in mind to be cautious about getting the carpets overly wet.
This method involves sprinkling a dry absorbent compound over the area of carpet needing to be cleaned, and then vacuum with the carpet cleaning machine. This method can be more expensive, but is also known to work better than a steam cleaner. Be sure to consider that although it can be more expensive, it can be less labor intensive.
